Based in Dunedin, we offer a range of face-to-face or online creative writing courses designed for beginning and more advanced writers and covering Fiction, Writing Your Life, Poetry and Nonfiction. 

This online course (8 topics ) is for those who have an interest in writing about personal history for publication, for their own satisfaction or to leave for family. Students work at their own pace to explore the art and craft of memoir and are given guidance in the process of imposing a narrative framework on experiences, memories and emotions. Each session of this course will be based on a theme: eg: a childhood memory, places, family and significant life events. Comprehensive workbooks and examples accompany this course and tutor feedback is given on weekly writing exercises. A new topic and exercises will be posted online every week for the first eight weeks. The course is designed to take a maximum of 4 months to complete. 

This seven-module introductory course is designed to develop skills in creative writing. Course content covers finding and developing your own voice, as well as overcoming creative fear. Important writing tools, such as grammar and narrative techniques, are covered. Extensive notes are provided on writing genres, short stories and novels. By the end of this course, students will have more idea of what genre they wish to write in as well as a good grounding in syntax, style and grammar. Students can work in their own time, at their own pace and will be given set exercises and peer and tutor feedback in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere online. Comprehensive workbooks and examples accompany this course, and tutor feedback is given on 20 writing exercises. The course is designed to be completed within four months, but we allow a year to complete the course. 

This 8 topics online course is designed for anyone interested in exploring the art and craft of writing poetry. The course will focus on the building blocks for making fine modern poems, including: sound, language, metaphor, forms, line length. Emphasis will also be placed on discovering what you want to say and how to say it. Students will be given weekly set exercises and peer and tutor feedback in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere online. Comprehensive workbooks and examples accompany this course and tutor feedback is given on weekly writing exercises. A new topic and exercises will be posted online every week for the first eight weeks. The course is designed to take a maximum of 4 months to complete. 

This seven-module online course follows on from Finding Your Voice but can also be undertaken by new students who are sufficiently advanced. This practical course shows how you can create fully rounded characters that come alive on the page and inhabit authentic worlds. It covers the crucial aspect of point of view and the development of plot and structure. By the end of this course, you will have a greater understanding of how to create compelling fictionStudents will be given comprehensive workbooks on each module along with 20 set exercises. Students who are already working on a novel or novella will have the option of submitting an extract of their work that will allow focus on the relevant module. Comprehensive workbooks and examples accompany this course, and tutor feedback is given on 20 writing exercises. The course is designed to be completed within 4 months, but we allow a year to complete the course.
